The Earl of Wessex hosted a reception today to congratulate ParalympicsGB on the team’s success at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.

As the Royal Patron for the British Paralympic Association (BPA), The Earl attended a lunchtime reception for all 15 athletes who competed for ParalympicsGB in Sochi to congratulate each athlete individually and to celebrate with the team.

ParalympicsGB won one gold – the first ever British Paralympic gold medal at a winter Games – as well as three silver and two bronze medals across two sports to finish in a highest ever position of 10th in the medal table.

The reception was held at the BPA’s offices and attended by athletes as well as staff from the winter sports and the BPA.

ParalympicsGB Chef de Mission for Sochi 2014, Penny Briscoe, said:

“This has been the most fantastic honour. After a wonderful Paralympic Games with so many outstanding performances, it is great that our Royal Patron wanted to show his support for the team by celebrating with a special event.

“The Earl of Wessex is incredibly busy and has many demands on his time, so everyone here was delighted when he said he could attend this event for the athletes. We are delighted to be receiving him today and look forward to spending some time with him talking about the Games and the team’s fantastic performances.”
