Millie Knight and Jen Kehoe followed up their Silver medal winning performance in the Giant Slalom by taking Bronze in the Slalom at the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships in Panorama, Canada yesterday evening.
The 16 year old skier and her guide coped well with the icy conditions on the 1st run but found themselves well off the pace of leaders Alexandra Frantseva and guide Semen Pliaskin from Russia. An improved performance in the 2nd run couldn’t move them further up the standings but they held off the challenge of American Danelle Umstead and her guide Rob Umstead to claim the Bronze medal in a total time of 2 minutes 13.81 seconds.
Knight is the youngest medal winner at the Championships, and she lead the way in a string of great performances from the young athletes on the Great Britain team. 20 year old Ben Sneesby claimed a stunning 6th place in the men’s sitting class after taking 16th in the Super-G and 14th in the GS. 17 year old James Whitley also showed his continued improvement and took his first top 10 finish in a major championship with 9th place in the men’s standing class following on from his 18th place in the GS.
“These results reflect the progress that the young athletes on the team have made this year and they bode very well for the challenges that lie ahead in 2017, 2018 and beyond." Duncan Freshwater
BDST Performance Director Duncan Freshwater said “These results reflect the progress that the young athletes on the team have made this year and they bode very well for the challenges that lie ahead in 2017, 2018 and beyond”.
There was less luck for Mick Brennan, Benji Millard and Chris Lloyd who all failed to finish the first run in conditions that were particularly difficult for the sit skiers starting at the back of the 100 strong field.
The slalom was the final event of the 2015 IPC Alpine Skiing World Championships and the athletes will now head home for a well-deserved break. Athletes from the BDST Development Squads will be in action at the Austrian National Championships (20th-22nd March) and the Italian National Championships (28th-29th March) and you can follow their progress on Twitter, Facebook or via the British Disabled Ski Team website.
